Antique Womens Cropped Waistcoat With Soutache Trim - Bust 94 cm
Museum quality antique women's waistcoat is black silk ornamented with soutache braiding on front and back. It has a high V neckline and is fitted at the front and back with darts disguised by the braid. The front dips down to the centre points. The back is cropped short, it would have been worn with a very high waisted skirt. The armholes are bound with silk and it is fully lined, also with silk. It is interfaced with a hessian type fabric to add body between the layers of silk. The little covered buttons down the front are ornamental - it closes with lots of little hooks and eyes. The lining is all hand stitched. No labels, it's a custom made garment. Late 1800s-early 1900s.
Size - Medium
Fits bust 94 cm (37")
Under bust, around the rib cage where the back ends 86 cm (34")
Shoulders 42 cm (16.5")
Length at the back 34 cm (13.5")
Length to the points at the front 49.5 cm (19.5")
The garment is in very good condition and the silk is sound. However, I think it would most likely deteriorate if being worn, which seems a shame. I also think it would be uncomfortable. There are two holes in the lining at the neck and an area at one armhole where the lining has come away from the binding. There's a very light mark on the back and some small shiny patches on the front. The silk is worn from the top of four buttons, one is a bit loose. Best for display or study.
