Antique, Victorian, 1890s Double-breasted Tail Coat - Chest 96 cm

Regular price $450.00 Sale price $359.99

Antique, Victorian, double-breasted tail coat has notched lapels with embroidered line trim. The sleeves have three button trim. I think it was originally four buttons, but the sleeves were shortened at some stage and the bottom button removed. I have restored the sleeves to the original length. There are two vertical glove pockets in the tails. Wool outer with silk twill lining. Possibly a riding jacket? Unfortunately, the label was removed. American - 1890s.

Measurements

Medium

  • Chest measures 99 cm (39") to fit 96 cm (38")
  • Shoulders 44 cm (17.5")
  • Back 37.5 cm (14.75")
  • Sleeve 65 cm (25.5")
  • Lapel width 8 cm (3 1/8")
  • Length at the front 51 cm (20")
  • Length at the back to bottom of tail 103 cm (40.5")

Condition

Fair but very wearable. The main issue is repairs to the lining of the tails. The lining was damaged during cleaning and I have darned it to a patch inside and tried to overlock the fraying silk by hand as best I could, but it's not beautiful. However, the lining is now stable. There's also an internal lining patch below the neck. The sleeves have been restored to the original length and the sleeve seams restitched. There are some old and new small darns, one in a sleeve, several in the inside back collar where they can't be seen. A small hole 3 x 4 mm below one of the front buttons which I have left alone as I think it will be less noticeable than with a darn.  Two other pin prick sized holes.
