Antique cream lace guimpe can be used as a layering piece, styled over or underneath another top.
A chemisette or guimpe would have been worn beneath a jacket or cardigan to give the appearance of wearing a blouse. This one has a front of cream cotton lace, a V neckline bound with ribbon and five plastic buttons at the front as trim. There are rows of tucks in the lace. The back is plain calico. The lower front is a double layer of cotton organdy. It fastens at each side by threading tapes through loops and then tying at the back to secure. A homemade item. 1910s-1920s.

Condition
Good. There are a number of mends and frayed sections in the organdy panel at the bottom, a few marks on the upper back and a couple of very faint small spots on the lace front, as shown. The buttons are scratched.
