Antique Cream Silk Embroidered, Semi-Circular, Edwardian Piano Shawl With Long Fringe
This treasure is not perfect but still so very beautiful.
Semi-circular shaped silk shawl has a very long fringe and a stitched back top with a shorter fringe and was probably much easier to keep in place than the more common square shawls, which would have been folded. Delicately embroidered flowers and tendrils have been worked all over by hand. The shawl would have been made in China for the export market at the turn of the last century. The former owner recalls her grandmother telling of how they rowed out to the ship to barter for the shawl. 1900-1920.
Width at the top excluding fringe 127 cm (50")
Depth from the top to bottom at centre back 66 cm (26")
Fringe 51 cm (20")
Fair. I have done a lot of work restoring this shawl. It has been cleaned as well as possible but there are still a lot of very faint foxing spots. There is one section with darker marks, as pictured. A few very small holes. The fringe was moth damaged and I have repaired some large holes in the webbing with original materials as well as I could. I even ironed every strand in the fringe individually!!
