This is a guimpe, also known as a chemisette or vestee, it is a false front used for modesty beneath a gown with a low neckline. It still works well beneath a blazer as long as you won't need to take the blazer off! This one has a very wide gathered, pleated, collar attached, with piped trim at the neck edge and lace at the front of the collar. Some pretty lace has been inserted into the front and it ties around the waist with a silk ribbon to keep it in place. The side edges have been left raw as they would not have been seen. It appears to be a homemade item. Cotton. 1910s or very early 1920s.
One size fits all.
Collar is 16.5 cm wide (6.5")
Length 43 cm (17")
Excellent. I threaded three holding threads through the gathers in the collar to hold in the pleats when I washed it, and I have left them in. You can remove them if you don't intend to ever wash it. I also replaced the silk ribbon as the original fell apart.
