Sensational Victorian black silk satin opera cape has an elaborate velvet appliqued and beaded design, stand up collar and ostrich feather trim.
Hip length and heavy, a weighty interfacing has been used. Two long, wide straps with buttoned ends extend from the neck and fasten criss crossed around the body to support the weight of the cape and to keep it in place in the wind by strapping to the body. It's lined with silk twill and has a wool interfacing to add warmth. The cape closes 2/3 of the way down the front with hooks and eyes. No label - 1890s.
Measurements
- Shoulders approximately 46 cm (18")
- Length 66 cm (26")
Condition
Overall appearance is good. The beading and trim are in excellent condition. Some of the velvet over the shoulders is very worn. There is wear and splitting to the silk at the inside of the collar. A 2.5 cm split on one shoulder and a couple of minor worn spots, as shown. Wear to the edge of the collar, not visible from the front due to the trim. Buttons on the straps are not original. Hook missing from the top of the neck.
